In Remembrance of my Father-in-Law, Walter Martin
4

Walter Martin was born in 1932. Today is the day that he passed away. I call him 'Daddy' even though he was my father-in-law. This always seemed like a fitting term of affection for him, his own children refer to him in the same way. I was fortunate to marry the youngest of his 6 children. I liked to tease him that he only had six children because he heard that every 7th... (posted by Bruce 1 day 19 hours ago.)
The Leslie Story: Sometimes Dad Does Know Best

When I was young, my family had a mini-bike. A mini-bike is kind of like a scooter, but it's not nearly as refined as a scooter. Our mini-bike was literally just a steel frame with a taped-together seat and a lawn-mower engine. My dad would fix the mini-bike and we would drive it for a few months until something broke on it again. Then Dad would wait a year or so and fix it again, and over the course of my... More Advice for My Boys: How to Make Others Think Well of You

How do you make others think well of you? A few weeks ago, my youngest son Nick was diagnosed as needing glasses. Nick's a smart kid, a book-worm with a genuine love for reading. (Where do you think that comes from?) Jean noticed him squinting first. Then we started noticing that he was missing school assignments that his teachers were writing on the board in the front of the classrooms.... (posted by Bruce 74 days 22 hours ago.)
Ants in My Pants

Jean and I moved half-way across the country to San Antonio Texas while we were still newlyweds. When we got to Texas, there were many new things we needed to learn. We didn't have much furniture: A bed, a table and two bean-bag chairs. One time there was an elderly gentleman that visited us from a church we had attended. After he asked if he could come into our small apartment to talk, I offered him a... (posted by Bruce 78 days 6 hours ago.)
The Latest Happenings of the Horsts, and their Amazing Community of Writers
4

It's been a while since I've posted, and at the risk of reminding everyone that I actually do exist, I thought I would write a short update. Life has been good these past few months. Jean and I have settled into a routine that is very different than it used to be, but it's an easy routine. Gone is the roller-coaster ride that we were on while our... Pig in the City

Even when Jean and I first started having kids, we thought it was important to maintain our 'date night' once or twice a month. When Zach was 2 we had one of these date nights and when we returned to our apartment at about 11:00 PM, Jean said she'd take the babysitter home because I was very tired. I had already fallen asleep when I heard Jean screaming, "Bruce, you have to come here to see this!" Of... (posted by Bruce 179 days 22 hours ago.)
To my beloved son, Zach.
2

This was originally posted in Sept. 2010 as a Facebook note, but I need to post it here: To my beloved son, Zach. When you were born I couldn't believe how much love a person could have for another. You liked to have your back scratched, so for years I would scratch your back by writing 'I-L-O-V-E-Y-O-U-Z-A-C-H-A-R-Y-!-!-!' on your back with my finger. I remember how you would giggle when I... My fabulous life
3

I've been enjoying reading the writing in the flawed / fabulous writing assignments, though there are only about half as many submissions to the fabulous assignment than there were to the flawed assignment. Why do you think that is? It seems to me that those of us who have struggled with the greatest flaws also have the potential to possess the most fabulous strengths. For myself, the two things in my... (posted by Bruce 205 days 22 hours ago.)
